  1. Freethinkers are humans who work out moral principles for themselves, instead of adopting the ambient morality. Today, freethinkers become some flavor of libertarian. The usual rate of freethinkers seems around 1 in 100. In early America, freethinkers concentrated themselves by emigration, and early America was the largest concentration of freethinkers ever, anywhere. However, having freethinker parents or growing up in a freethinker culture does not noticeably increase the likelihood you are a freethinker. We don’t know what causes it. Maybe it’s an environmental factor we don’t understand, like how gopher tortoise babies’ sexes are set by the temperature the eggs experience. In any case, the children of the freethinkers were mostly not freethinkers, and re-enslaved the parents. Even Ron Paul can’t convince his son Rand Paul to adopt his libertarian worldview. What is Ron going to do, put his son in prison until he swears off majority rule? Are all libertarians willing to put 99% of their family members in reeducation camps until they have a come to Mises moment?

We can discard the idea that people don’t become freethinkers because they’ve never heard the policy analysis; libertarians in college happily provided that with bullhorns. If you didn’t go to college, the “google Ron Paul” signs everywhere would do it. If you want liberty, you’ll have to figure out what you’re willing to do to prevent your own wife and children from attempting to set up a system of majority rule.

Here’s an idea. Ron Paul the parent didn’t allow Rand Paul the small child to play with his wallet. Why did Ron relent and allow Rand to play with his money when he got older? Suppose libertarians switch to crypto good enough to hide all their business and banking, stop paying taxes, and stop obeying bad laws. They will instantly be noticeably wealthier, and some will taunt the normies on social media. Perhaps then there will be a cascade to financial privacy, as none of the 99% want to be the only chumps paying taxes.

    1. Interesting theory – and if that happened in any significant way, I’m sure that the NSA would feed the IRS to make a few examples . . .

      1. If initially 1% of the population does it (35 million), and isn’t pacifist, and doesn’t surrender, and mutually supports itself, then it doesn’t matter what the gooferment wants. Do you remember when OSHA declared it would regulate and inspect home offices? That initiative vanished after a week.

In Connecticut in 2014 the legislature passed a gun registration law, the penalty for noncompliance was a felony. Six months before it went into effect they sent out 250,000 registered letters as reminders to people who were believed to be gun owners, presumably collected from background checks made for retail sales. In response there were no protests, marches, speeches, letter writing campaigns, phone calls to legislative offices, yard signs, or anything else that would separate anyone from the protection of the herd. But the compliance rate was under 10%. The governor huffed and puffed and stomped his feet on TV, and ordered the state police to go door to door to inspect. The state police declined. Nothing happened.

      2. Oops, 1% of population is 3.5 million, not thirty-five million. But yes, the improvement of firearms 100 years ago means a farmer is capable of fighting the king’s soldiers without exotic physical training to use a sword. Therefore, all modern governments are democracies. The genocides in China, Russia, and Germany during the 20th century only happened because the victims didn’t fight back. There was a military fight, but the battleground was inside the victims’ brains.

        1. And, there were far fewer guns in the hands of people who might have used them. We really don’t have any excuse.
