Oh, SNAP: The Waste, The Fraud, The Envy, And You’re Not Alone

Matt has come a long way.

Each time the Trump Administration does something, they bubble things up to the public consciousness that The Powers That Be would rather people not think about.  Yeah, Trump is part of The Powers That Be, but this .gov shutdown is exactly what I voted for.

What have you missed during the shutdown?

Oh, nothing?

What if it went on for two months?  Four?  What if only the “essential” parts (ICE, the actual warfighting part of .mil, and . . . wait, I’m running out of essential) restarted?

It seems like we have discovered (this is not an original idea, /pol/ discusses this frequently) that SNAP (Sheer Nonsense And Plunder) is a program that works like this:

  • Infinity illegal aliens are
  • encouraged to come to the country
  • to make cheap carbohydrates
  • to feed to minorities
  • so that Herculean medical efforts are expended to solve the problems caused by the cheap carbs.

Who profits?

  • Illegals.
  • Farmers.
  • Big Agribusiness, Big Soda, and Big Sloppa.
  • Minorities (short term, until the untimely heart attack).
  • Hospitals.
  • Doctors.
  • Insurance Companies.

Is it all just a machine to turn your tax dollars into illegals, obesity, and corporate profits?

You decide.  Regardless, I think the Democrats will blink.  Maybe.  I sure hope note, I mean, this is what I voted for.

  1. I liked Oilfield Rando’s part about having SNAP recipients check in each month but I disagree with him wanting to revoke SNAP for putting pineapple on pizza.

    Pineapple is the Best. Topping. Ever. And adding fruit makes pizza the perfect balanced meal containing all 4 major food groups (i.e., the perfect SNAP food).

  3. My husband served in the US Air Force under Jimmah Carter; at that time we were eligible for food stamps. I told my husband I would serve soup made from grass clippings before we applied for food stamps.

    1. A strip joint nearby made the news because their food items qualified for SNAP. I guess they waved the door fee. They were making enough money that even a GOV employee noticed. BTW: nothing was done to stop the practice.

    2. For the record, a 40 oz Slurpee has 90 grams = 3.2 ounces of sugar for $2.79. So an EBT Slurpee is paying $2.79/3.2 = 87 cents per ounce for sugar.

      At Wal Mart, a Great Value 4 pound bag of sugar (notice how they’ve shrinkflation downsized it from a 5 pound bag???) contains 4*16 = 64 ounces for $3.07 or 3.07/64 = 5 cents per ounce.

      So an EBT Slurpee costs at least 87/5 = 17 times more than the (dubious) food value that’s in it. This is why the SNAP fraud train rolls on. It’s about grift, not grain.

      Meanwhile, there’s 1.4 billion pounds of cheese in storage in Missouri – 33 pounds for every single SNAP recipient.

      That’s 33 pounds per SNAP enrollee…

  5. The purpose of food stamps & SNAP is social pacification, as multiple studies report higher rates of obedience & good behavior with overfeeding. This is why most US prison inmates receive upwards of 4500 calories/day & the typical US soldier is allotted almost 7500 calories/day, even though the typical US male only requires about 2500 calories/day to maintain optimal bodyweight & functionality.

    Male testosterone levels are also inversely proportional Obesity & BMI, making the male population subset much less aggressive & much more amenable to external control if kept fat and happy.

    2. About that 7500 cal. for soldiers- since soldiers arent allowed to be fat, do you really believe thats likely? Now, when soldiers are doing hard manual things and burning calories they do get more. Soldiers in the field arent “ typical male needing 2500 cal….”

  7. An example of the madness is the fat cow showcased during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans screaming: “We are going to starve”, the day after the hurricane hit.
    Locally, a leftist TV reporter interviewed a guy in his late 50s. He is saying that without SNAP, he would have to reprioritize his spending. Then they show the crap junk food he was “living” on. Sure didn’t win me over.
    Another reporter whinning about GOV employees not being paid so they were raiding the food banks. Note that every GOV is compensated far better than anyone else in a pay grade, while basically immune to ever being laid off or fired. They are the last ones anyone should be handing freebies or crying over. Well, except for the $%@ illegals.

  8. It’s a wonderful opportunity to create black market items with taxpayer money buying the goods. That, and creative sales can turn milk into cigarettes, beer, and some cash for lottery tickets. Of course, the exchange rate depends on the proprietor, but it creates a substantial profit whatever it may be. If they caned offenders in public, the number of willing participants would dwindle.

  10. A similar parallel was the whole “environmental” racket with leaking gasoline/diesel tanks. I’ve either been a GM of an oil jobber or environmental consultant to the same for almost 50 years.

    It all started on 60 Minutes eons ago (early ’80s), when they had a story about how some small town’s water supply well was contaminated from leakage from a service station USTs (Underground Storage Tanks). Mania ensued. But, Big Oil knew that in advance.

    In 1980 Exxon sold us our bulk storage plant for $50K; it should have been $200K or so, if market forces prevailed. The next year Esso sold us all USTs & pumps for $51K, again well below market value.

    Had to register all USTs with the EPA, mid-80s. Starting on 12/23/89, state environmental agencies started to regulate.

    80% of what was spent to excavate contaminated soil, install groundwater monitoring wells & “clean up” contaminated groundwater was useless waste.

    I’d guess $3-4 trillion (minimum) went down the drain to the national environmental giants. Some to me too, I admit.

    But the biggest and saddest outcome is that almost every mom ‘n pop C-store was run out of business. Everything now is Wawa, Circle K, QuikTrip, Sheetz, et al. In an urban setting, the average C-Store is $8-9MM to build.

    And you can buy a diet cola, chips & jerky at Wawa with your Food Stamps. When did they become EBT/SNAP?

  11. Excellent collection on this, John. For some reason, I didn’t even see the note on the first one – the candy panties being eligible for SNAP-EBT – until I was done reading everything. Probably because the concept is so far from normal to me it’s like 20 sigma and I’d never expect it.

  12. My girlfriend works at dollar general- she’s been saying that she sees EBT cards with 10-15,000 dollar balances
    all the time- I mentioned this to the cashier at my local Kroger yesterday and he says he’s seen on with a 17,000
    dollar balance- what gives?????????

  15. The first ten years I was in the Army, I was eligible for, (but never got) food stamps. Somehow we lived.
