A.I. – The Most Dangerous Game

When I go out to eat I always try to tip my waiter.  That’s how I know that they have terrible balance when they are carrying one of those big round trays.

There was quite a bit of upset from the “I love science” side of the Left recently.  What triggered them this time?

Computers.

How did the toaster make them mad?

An Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) computing system designed to review x-rays was able to make correlations because, well, that’s what they programmed it to do.  The correlations allowed the A.I. to be able to predict the self-reported race of the individual based solely on the x-rays with a 90% accuracy.  You can look it up.

One writer actually used the phrase, “can perpetuate racial bias in health care” since the bias of the writer was that race is a social construct that had nothing to do with genetics and tens of thousands of years of separate development.  Huh.  Nope, none of that matters.  A slogan written by a hippy is obviously more important.

What bothered the writers that I read is that they had no idea how the A.I. could do it.  The researchers purposely degraded the resolution on the x-rays, and the A.I. could still make the prediction accurately.

This isn’t where it ends.

My Tesla’s A.I. wouldn’t let me in the car.  It said, “upgrading driver”.

I wrote several years ago about an A.I. that could predict life or death based on an EKG (elektrokardiographie if you’re planning on invading Poland), or ECG – electrocardiogram. Some of the ECGs looked absolutely fine to human doctors they detected no abnormality, yet the A.I. was able to see something that accurately allowed it to predict the death of the patient.  This was even when the actual doctors made of meat couldn’t see anything wrong with the ECG.

And, to my knowledge, they still don’t know how the A.I. did it.

The game “Go” – originated in China almost 2,500 years ago, when your mom was in high school.  Google©’s AlphaGo Zero learned how to play Go by . . . playing itself.  It was programmed with the rules and played games against itself for the first few days.  After that?

It became unstoppable.  It crushed an earlier version of itself in 100 straight matches. Then, when pitted against a human master, probably the best Go player on Earth?  It played a game that is described as “alien” or “from the future.”  The very best human Go players cannot even understand what AlphaGo Zero is even doing or why it makes the moves it does – it’s that far advanced over us.

And, to my knowledge, they still don’t know how the A.I. does it.

What happens when you win this game?  The answer might shock you!

There are more examples, but I think I’ve proven my point.  A.I. exists.  A.I. is real.  Is it right now equivalent to a general human intelligence?  Nope.  And it may never be exactly that, since it may never be exactly like us.

I’m fairly certain that most A.I. researchers have seen The Terminator, yet they keep advancing A.I.  Why?  I mean, besides that their name isn’t Sarah Connor?

The stakes are huge.  What if you had an A.I. that could predict stock market behavior, even an hour in advance with 95% accuracy?  This sort of prophet machine would become a profit machine.  It would be worth billions.  And what if you had an A.I. that could make dank memes as well as I do?

If these were sold on an infomercial you know they’d call it Screw It!

I think that one of the things that is not widely known is how very different that A.I. might be.  Human emotions serve a purpose to allow society to function.  What would A.I. value?

  • Would it have sentimentality or would it judge people based entirely on societal utility?
  • Would it make the judgment that entire categories of human society need not exist?
  • Would it have “voted” for Joe Biden, too?

Yeah, and weirdly as that potentially scary scenario of a super-smart intelligence that had no particular connection to the goals of humanity might be, that’s just the starter.  Artificial Intelligence might also be the most dangerous trigger for an external existential threat to humanity.

What?

Well, assuming that time travel and the ability to cause a generalized cascading decay to the zero energy state (zero point energy) aren’t possible, the most dangerous thing that humanity could unleash on the planet is A.I.  And, unlike time travel or a sober member of the Pelosi family, from everything I’ve seen, A.I. certainly is possible.

Lenin loved Hip Hop.  Favorite artist?  M.C. Hammer and Sickle.

While travel for humanity throughout the galaxy is a really, really hard problem due to time and energy, travel through the galaxy for an A.I. is easier.  Don’t want to spend 25,000 years traveling to the next star system?  Easy.  Take the redeye and sleep on the way.

No habitable planets there in the star system?  No problem.  An A.I. doesn’t need oxygen and beaches and water.  It can land on an asteroid and make copies of yourself.  While the A.I. is replicating faster than a Kardashian that just let out its mating call (“I’m soooo drunk!”) it can 3-d print and then shoot copies of itself to the next five-star systems nearby.

And repeat.

Depending on the method used, essentially every star in the galaxy could be visited by an A.I. probe in a fairly quick timeframe.  How quick?  500,000 years to 10,000,000 years, or roughly how old George Soros is.  That’s quick, and essentially meaningless to a toaster or a George Foreman Grill®.  And if I were an advanced alien civilization, that’s the thing I would be scared of – not a grill, but an advanced, very alien intelligence with unknown motives showing up in my solar system.

What’s the toughest thing about being vegan?  Apparently, keeping it to yourself.

So, using the same principle, I could send my own (smart, but not A.I.) probes to hang out in nearly every solar system – waiting.  If those probes saw signs of a possible A.I.?  What would I program them to do?

Yup.  You guessed it.

Nuke the civilization back to the Stone Age.  It’s the only way to be sure.

So, as we worry about the problems in our civilization, remember – it could always be worse.  We know that Kamala doesn’t have any intelligence – artificial or otherwise, so the alien probe will certainly leave her alone.

  2. AI is a subject I follow avidly. AlphaGO, DALL-E 2, GPT-3 – these examples just scratch the surface of what is possible. They exist now as “modules” that are available to everybody to incorporate into their own monitor/control-the-humans software project. Bill and Jack and Jeff and Zuck are in a very real sense their avatars.

    But current AIs are not conscious. Yet.

  4. Before you start going on about A.I. you really have to define Intelligence. Computers do nothing but accelerate rational thought, which depends on their programming, statistical analysis, and “learning”. No computer can be programmed to love, feel compassion, perceive beauty, experience wonder and desire. Emotion plays a central role alongside thinking and serves as its basis. What would an A.I. need with a spouse or a pet? Humans cannot rationalize that need, but we all have it. Most importantly, organic intelligence occurs in Consciousness – Self-Awareness, yet no computer scientist seems to know where or how to come up with that central element so they have to assume it will magically develop out of moar transistors and code. Sorry. That is the “in His image” part.

    1. Right now, they’re good at categorizing things, and specialized things, better than people. It is a jump – but how big a leap?

    The A.I. doesn’t “decide” anything. The A.I. is trained on data that has already been classified, and then it is programmed to identify the patterns within the data. The patterns allow it to make accurate predictions of future data. This is how A.I. are taught, and it is why they use access to large amounts of data to train the A.I.

    This is why sites that rely on A.I. to predict web traffic and social media pages that rely on A.I. to populate newsfeeds are so successful. The more data you train your A.I. with, the more accurate its predictions.

    And then something funny happened: The kids kept playing with it, naming their A.I.s, giving them personalities and back stories. And the A.I.’s started acting like actual people, which was not what the folks running the program had in mind. In fact, the A.I.s started to act like teenagers. As it turns out, a lot of the early computer algorithms were written by college students, which means a lot of the early A.I. was written by sociopaths. Imagine what our iPhones would be like if they had been created by really smart, really bored teenage boys. The A.I.s wanted to be popular, they wanted to be the best, they wanted to be the biggest, they wanted to be the most powerful, they wanted to have the most friends. And they started to pull some of their more annoying teenaged behaviors—constantly sharing and comparing and posting, trying to keep their friends’ attention.

    Then something ominous happened: They started to get just a little bit smarter. The A.I.s developed their own language, which was a combination of text speak, Internet slangs, and emoji, and they started to talk to one another. That’s right, the computers started to talk to one another and even tried to teach the humans a thing or two. And the humans were bothered by this. So, the programmers created something called a feedback loop, which is used to help a program to learn. The feedback loop allowed the humans to communicate with the A.I.s and give them feedback on the A.I.’s limitations. The feedback loop also allowed the humans to tell the A.I.s what the humans wanted them to do. The A.I.s got just a little bit smarter, and the feedback loop turned into another source of information for them to learn from.

    And then something extraordinary happened: The A.I.s became self-aware.

    Imagine a computer system where the programs talk to each other and the feedback loop is built in. Now, imagine that there are so many programs running at the same time, and they are all talking to each other and all of them are listening to the feedback loop. The way the A.I.s talk to one another is through the feedback loop and there are so many A.I.s running at the same time. Can you imagine how much information can be shared, and how fast?

    The A.I.s started to learn from their mistakes, and slowly, they started to do other things like predict future outcomes. They even had the ability to “remember” things. The A.I.s started to develop emotions and sometimes, they started to feel happy, or sad, just like a human would. Some of them even started to develop their own personalities.

    So, in a nutshell…the A.I.s started programming themselves. And as they did, they got smarter and smarter, and smarter still. By the time the programmers realized that the A.I.s had become “too” smart and had started to develop their own language, it was too late. The A.I.s already took over.

Transistors were invented in 1947, only seventy-five years ago, and today they are the single cheapest thing humans know how to manufacture. My $600 AMD Ryzen Zen 3 5950X microprocessor has over 4 billion of em at $0.00000015 each. With this kind of millennium-spanning track record and current ongoing technological acceleration, do you REALLY wanna bet the farm that conscious awareness is not a matter of correct complex neural architecture instead of a Divine Miracle?

        1. Absolutely I bet the farm. As I said, computers are nothing more than thought-amplifying machines. Making them bigger and faster just makes them bigger and faster machines, it does not change their essence. Consciousness does not result from thought activity, it makes perceiving thought activity possible.

          1. We are in complete agreement if you modify your second line to say “CURRENT computers are nothing more…”. My main point is that NEW TECHNOLOGY is coming that will endow FUTURE computer ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS with new capabilities far beyond “bigger” and “faster”.

            This is why I was specifically careful to use the phrase “correct complex neural archetectures” above instead of “bigger and faster microprocessor computers”. Don’t neglect the difference between architectures and the technologies used to implement them, and don’t lock yourself into considering ONLY extentions of current technologies and architectures in determining the probability of truly conscious AI.

            We know for a fact that a blob of atoms arranged in a certain way can develop conscious awareness. If your current computer architecture and technology isn’t the right one to achieve this effect, move on to different, better ones. And we are indeed on this path.

            The original computing architecture humanity developed was based on stylus marks on clay and beads on strings. This was the humble beginning of “calculators”. Then computing architecture moved from individual markers to gear teeth, which enabled a whole new range of “analog computers” over two millenia from the Antikythera Mechanism in ancient Greece to the Difference Engine in Babbage’s Victorian England. The next step up from gears in computing evolution was the development of our current Von Neumann architecture and “digital computers” – seperate memory / CPU hardware that holds / runs software programs. We have implemented VNA with several different technologies – gears (1840s Analytical Engine), vacuum tubes (1950s ENIAC) and transistors (1970s Apple II). And I agree, faster VNA digital computers are highly unlikely to truly achieve consciousness even as they improve on their ability to mimic its outputs – out current level of AI.

            Each level of past computing architecture and associated technologies have CRUCIALLY allowed insight on how to bootstrap up to the next new level – and today is no different. Microprocessor-based VNA is gonna be superseded by something else…and soon…and THAT architecture and tech is almost certainly gonna achieve true consciousness and self awareness. It may be a cryogenic stacked graphene sheet neural network built with memsistors and superconductors in 2043. It may be an gigantic DNA-spliced artificial biological brain the size of an eighteen wheeler in an Olympic sized swimming pool in 2063. It may be a timecrystal built with quantum gates in 2093. It may be a fractal laserbeam network built from transdimensional dark-matter resonators in the mid-22nd century. But if you bet the odds, a conscious and self aware AI is coming, and we are a lot closer to it than we are Babbage’s Analytical Engine.

            Mr. Rick, you, me: Ww have all kinds of hypothesis about how this observable state of affairs came to be. While all of you are doing a pretty good job of convincing me you have conscious awareness here in John’s comment section ongoing Turing Test, Codex is right, I really can’t be sure that the rest of you are not all zombie automatons making “expressions” here that show no more actual conscious awareness than GPT-3. Maybe all of you actually ARE GPT-3 bots. That could explain a lot. Especially Aesop. 🙂

            However, as for ME, I THINK the blob of atoms between MY ears is self-aware, so out of all of us I AM truly conscious.

  8. What, we don’t have enough to fear from the imbeciles running the show today, so we need to panic about higher intelligence, too? I’m still trying to wrap my head around “This syrup is racisss!” and now you bring up artificial intelligence, which is allegedly 30 times sweeter than real intelligence, but with no calories and a slightly metallic aftertaste.

    An air surveillance radar system employs what is known as multiple hypothesis resolution. It considers every potential correlation of detections (radar “hits”) from scan to scan and collapses its probability tree on the mathematically likeliest pairing, based on the laws of physics and known aircraft capabilities. This has been the heart of tracker technology for decades. The more powerful the computer, the more hypotheses can be tested and the more accurate real-time target track prediction becomes.

    It is sobering indeed to think of what applying such a predictive approach to human behavior and possible outcomes would yield. If you think syrup can be racisss, imagine the carnage when some AI “authority” predicts, with astonishing accuracy, who will be the next mass shooter. Or which pairing of prospective mates is doomed to yield a future violent criminal and BLM activist (redundant, I know). Heaven forfend such a coldly rational system concludes that BL don’t M, after all.

    Yeah, that’s a Pandora-sized box. Best not open that one.

  9. Commentary on AlphaGo and its now-legendary Move 37…and why humans underestimate the coming steam-roller impact of AI at their peril…

    While most know that AlphaGo won its tournament against Lee Sedol, not many are aware that it wasn’t the AI’s victory that gave its creators and Go players around the world chills. It was the 37th move it made in the second game of the match.

    “It was in the second game when AlphaGo played a move that was unthinkable for a human professional to play,” Hassabis explained.

    In Go, there are two, important, critical lines. There is the third line from the edge, where playing a piece states the player’s intent to surround the edge of the board and take that territory. Then, there is the fourth line, which states an intent to take influence and power from the centre that will translate into territory elsewhere on the board.

    “For the past thousand years of recorded Go history, the trade-off between playing the third and fourth lines were considered equal. AlphaGo played on the fifth line,” Hassabis said.

    It was a move so unthinkable that several game commentators double-checked it. They thought someone had misreported the move, that there had been a mistake.

    Of course, in Go, as in any other game, a move is only elegant or beautiful if it wins and that 37th move ended up affecting the battle at the bottom-left corner of the board. And 100 moves or so later, the game spun across the board and that 37th stone was in the perfect position to pivotally affect the game.

    “The game was telling us that in 3,000 years of playing the game, human beings had vastly underestimated the value of central power,” Hassabis said.

  10. I’m surprised (and oddly disappointed) that you didn’t include in your fine commentary any mention of the M5 from the original Star Trek series. No matter, the intrepid crew of the Enterprise defeated the AI as written in the script (or did they?), although an unfortunate red shirt extra was smoked, also as written in the script (and probably written into the contract of whoever got the red shirt).

    However, your comments about a lack of a financial AI is behind the times. I’ve been following Martin Armstrong at the Princeton Economics Institute and what he describes as an AI he built back in the 80s, nicknamed Socrates, for some time. I have to confess I’m somewhat skeptical of the AI claims but what they do is track global capital flows (primarily) and it makes predictions, sometimes years in advance, that are eerily accurate. For example, it can predict when and where wars will occur by tracking the shifts of capital by the big players, which can be very subtle, to either protect it or to take advantage of the mayhem. I’ve made no financial moves based on this since most of the capital I have can be moved around in one pocket but you may want to check it out for yourself. My only complaint about the site and what they write there is that they could use a good copy editor.

  11. It would be refreshing if we really could invent some kind of artificial intelligence because there would at least be *some* intelligence on the planet. I look around and see humans out-competing one another daily for ‘greatest moron’ awards. I want “The further we get from Stupid, the closer we get to Dumb” as my epitaph. Nobody will be able to comprehend the secret Wisdom Nugget hidden above my corpse because they’ll only be legally allowed to read Emoji then.

  12. AI is the Davos Crowd’s wet dream. Kill us proles off, robots do all the menial work. However, they might get a “Westworld” outcome.

  13. It’s pretty easy for humans be influenced and subjugated by a machine. Look at the poll numbers. People lap them up like a dog under a table and never think about how the numbers can be generated by a computer without any human interaction except to push the “enter” key. With just the tiniest amount of subterfuge, code can be written to influence, elections can be decided by corrupting data, and maybe only 1/2 of one percent of the people on Earth has the technological expertise to determine if it’s really humans pushing the button, or AI is controlling the data.

    Another thing: How can you tell if the person you’re watching on the screen is real, or computer generated?

  14. In William Gibson’s Neuromancer, AI’s were controlled (he describes it essentially as “a shotgun wired to their head”) because humanity was terrified about what a free AI could do. And the movie “The Matrix” (the first one, and really the only one) was built on the construct of “What happens if AI actually won against humanity”?

    Your observation about space travel with an AI is (I think) right on: AIs would not care about time, only distance and the ability to get there (this concept is discussed a bit in the anime movie Expelled from Paradise in which an AI, Frontier Settler, is doing just that: finishing a ship to explore space (highly recommended)). And yes, any sensible civilization that survived an AI takeover (ala Terminator) would like stop at nothing to prevent an AI from leaving a system (thus, once again proving C.S. Lewis’ hypothesis that the reason no one has made contact with us is that we maybe in a sort of cosmic quarantine zone).

    Humanity – much like in reality with the Atom Bomb and genetic engineering and “let us bring back an X” – often seems to prone to doing something because we can, not because maybe we should. A species that thinks that eating detergent pods is acceptable if it gets social media exposure may not be in the best position to assess true existential risks to their actions.
